‘Walk for Life’ raises cancer awareness

A “Walk for Life” initiative was flagged off by Gursharan Kaur, wife of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, here on Sunday to raise awareness of cancer, show solidarity with people afflicted by the disease, and raise funds for their palliative and supportive care services.

The walk — a CanSupport initiative which was supported by the American Center and Max India Foundation — saw the participation of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and United States Ambassador to India Timothy Roemer.

Apart from cancer survivors, who led the walk at the venue, eminent sports personalities also participated along with ‘Shera,’ the mascot of the Commonwealth Games. Shera’ proved a big hit with the crowds while spreading the message of togetherness, joy and belonging in the spirit of the Commonwealth Games, due to be held in the Capital later this year.

The two pronged message carried through the initiative was that cancer was curable when detected early and that there was life after the disease. The others who participated in the walk were actors Sharmila Tagore and Rahul Bose. The participants covered a 4.5 km stretch starting from Vinay Marg.
